
DeWitt started appearing on stage at the age of 13. At 13 years old, Dewitt began to perform on the stage. She graduated with a Bachelor in Arts degree from Ball State University. Then, when she was acting in summer shows when she met with the director, she convinced her to enroll in UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary while at UCLA. DeWitt's role as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 period is among her most famous. She was chosen to play the show's pilot and got the job. She also played Janet in an episode of the show in 1979. spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt made her acting debut in an episode of 1984 of Three's Company. In June 1991, she returned to acting with the role of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then she appeared on the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured an actress who was modelled after her voiced by another actress in 1997. She appeared in an episode Cybill and also made an appearance on Living Single's final episode. Her work in the 2000s include television shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
