Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a speaking event organizer. Feminist Frequency provides videos, commentaries and analysis of the way in which popular culture portrays women. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is a site dedicated to education, which examines women's positions in the pop culture narratives, is her brainchild. Additionally, she serves as the executive director. She's committed to removing stereotypes about women and how they are depicted in pop culture. In addition she aims to create the awareness of harassment on social media targeted towards women as well as marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian, who has an MA in the field of Social and Political Thinking from York University, is a sought after public speaking. She has spoken at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was concerned about issues related to gender and rights for women at an early stage. She was a young woman who wanted to create a series of web videos to examine the gender roles in games. But, she was victimized by online harassment. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as an activist for women in media. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning media critic. She is also the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that explores pop culture gender representations.
